Historias de guerra: las narrativas de los veteranos franceses y la "experiencia de guerra" en el siglo XIX

Las Guerras Revolucionarias y Napoleónicas fueron las primeras en la Historia sobre las que los soldados corrientes escribieron en grandes cantidades. Este artículo, que se centra en el recuerdo francés de dichas guerras, examina una gran variedad de memorias publicadas desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta el siglo XX. A lo largo de ese tiempo vemos un enfoque diferente de la guerra y de cómo esta fue recordada y evocada, de forma mucho más personal y experiencial que como se había hecho hasta entonces. El presente artículo argumenta que la exactitud histórica de estas narrativas carece de importancia. En vez de eso, revelan mucho más acerca de cómo estas guerras fueron representadas y recordadas. Igualmente importante es lo que estas narraciones muestran a los historiadores acerca de las vidas (privadas) de los soldados durante dichas guerras, y qué era lo que estos excombatientes pensaban y sentían, a posteriori, acerca de determinados hechos. De igual modo, no es tan importante aquí la realidad de la “experiencia de guerra” como el constructo cultural que sobre ella se genera. Así, las memorias de guerra son una fuente de gran importancia para abordar el modo en que los excombatientes y la sociedad francesa decidieron recordar y procesar el pasado.
