About the Journal

Welcome to the Website of the Revista Universitaria de Historia Militar  (ISSN: 2254-6111)

Since its inception in 2012, the Revista Universitaria de Historia Militar (RUHM) has sought to address the need for a fresh perspective within Spanish-language war studies. The journal’s main goal has been to explore new questions that lead to alternative viewpoints, interpretations and debates on violence, war and the military. By doing so, the RUHM project endeavors to make military history a compelling and relevant field of research for the Spanish-speaking academic community.

From the outset, RUHM has been committed to becoming a reference platform for promoting scholarship in war studies. The journal embraces a broad approach, encompassing diverse chronological periods—from Antiquity to the present—and a wide range of thematic perspectives, including political, economic, social, cultural, memory, technological and scientific. Through this comprehensive scope, we aim to introduce and promote the latest historiographical trends to the Spanish-speaking community, and to foster connections between research on both sides of the Atlantic.

RUHM can proudly claim to be the first Spanish academic journal to specialize in military history and war studies. It adheres to a double-blind peer-review process, following the initial review by the Editorial Board, and is indexed in several national and international academic databases. Looking ahead, RUHM aims to establish itself as a national and international reference in military history and war studies, particularly in a country where the study of armed conflicts, violence and military institutions has not received special academic recognition.

Through the constant, albeit not always fluid, dialogue between historiography and society, RUHM is committed to connecting and engaging with the public interest enticed by military history and war studies. The journal’s open-access model exemplifies this drive, ensuring that the latest academic research is available to all and promoting a broader societal understanding of the history of war.

This Special Issue examines the diverse roles of women in resistance movements
during the Second World War, focusing on case studies from Spain, Greece, Italy, and
Poland. It challenges the traditionally militarized and male-dominated definitions of
resistance, emphasizing women’s crucial contributions to both armed and unarmed
efforts. The articles reveal how women navigated entrenched societal norms to engage
in activities such as guerrilla logistics, combat, sabotage, and clandestine
organization, often reshaping their roles in wartime society. By exploring these
overlooked aspects of resistance, the issue highlights how women’s actions advanced
liberation struggles and fostered significant social and cultural transformations.
