Abstract

This article aims to present an overview of the veterans of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, a Brazilian military unit sent to fight in Italy during the Second World War (1944–1945), still alive as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of its creation (August 9, 2023). The importance of this action is exemplified by the fact that Brazil was the only Latin American country to send troops to fight in Europe and was one of the first countries to join the United Nations in the post-war period. We followed the path of triangulation of sources in search of information about these war veterans, through the construction of the FEB Permanent Census (organized by the National Association of Veterans of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force—ANVFEB), to obtain data in order to build the narratives historical. In the present research, summary tests were carried out, as flashes, which demonstrates the potential of the records. However, we recognize that we still have work to do to preserve this memory in the military field. Using the approximate methodology of population demography, we observed the FEB Permanent Census record released on July 1, 2023, with a total of 72 living veterans, spread across fifteen federative units in the Brazilian territory, and from there we carried out a quantified analysis by age , gender, region, military rank, combat unit, medals received and others. Drawing on renowned theorists on history and memory, such as Pierre Nora, Paul Ricoeur, Michael Pollak and Henry Rousso, we discuss the ways in which the memory of Brazil's participation in the Second World War has been constructed since the end of the conflict in 1945, until today, when we identify the peak of military and academic interest in the topic. We conclude by observing the imminent end of this group of historical agents and the need for tools to preserve and disseminate their memories about this extremely relevant fact in world history and transformer of Brazilian nationality.
