Abstract

The beginning of the Operation Peace for Galilee (1982) was the result of the enormous Israeli military superiority and the expected US tolerance, so that Menahem Begin and Ariel Sharon thought they had a historical chance for eluding the territorial division of the old Mandate of Palestine. As a consequence, the bulk of the offensive was focused on the destruction of the PLO, without considering that it would shift the existing power balance in Lebanon, allowing other actors like the Shiite militias to play a more important role. They became very skilful enemies and received the military support provided by Syria and Iran, which intended to use instability in the Israeli-Lebanese border as a means to defend their regional interests.
