This text presents the model of Compulsory Military Service (SMO) in contemporary times. It analyzes its regression since the end of the Cold War. It synthesizes the reasons for its collapse, its shortcomings, and its advantages. It raises its role as a vector of nationalization and the memory that SMO veterans have been building. It lists the reasons that have brought SMO back to the present and the reasons to reconsider the validity of the model. It analyzes the contributions made to the study of the past of this model and the construction of its memory. The Spanish example is used as a thread for the exposition, but a long-term global analysis is carried out.
